![[THE HISTORY OF THE GAA IN CANADA]](gaa.jpg)
John O'Flynn
The History of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Canada (Book--nonfiction)
Both before and after the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded in Ireland in 1884, Irish immigrants in several Canadian provinces were determined to preserve their athletic heritage. And, as this fact-filled history shows, the flag of Irish sports has flown strong in Canada for more than two centuries.
Notable among Irish sporting traditions is the oldest European field game, hurling--the fastest game in the world--in which players use an ash wood stick and a hard ball. Many argue that Canada's national sport, ice hockey, has its origins in hurling. Indeed, the word puck is derived from the Irish word poc, the action of striking the ball with a hurley. Among other Irish sports that have enlivened Canadian communities over the years are handball, rounders, and Camogie--the ladies' version of hurling. The skilful play of Gaelic football has dominated, however, and continues to be the greatest strength in modern times.
Capturing and preserving many wonderful memories for the Canadian-Irish community, here is not only a record but also--above all--a celebration of the role of sports in Irish culture.
"All things Gaelic go into great sports history book . . . packed with historical anecdotes and names of players past and present 'to acknowledge the fact [that] these people enjoyed what they did, they were prepared to sacrifice whatever time was needed for the games to be played,' O'Flynn said. [His book ensures] 'that there [will] be some literature and some memory of the Irish communities.'"--Bob Mackin, Vancouver Courier
John O'Flynn, a Vancouver teacher and writer, has roots in both County Limerick and County Kerry. After learning Gaelic football and hurling with the Vancouver Irish Sporting and Social Club, he represented the club, playing Gaelic football in two North American County Board Championships: 1984 Boston and 1985 Chicago. In 1987, he attended the founding meeting in Toronto of the Canadian County Board of the GAA, has presented workshops on Gaelic football to teachers and at youth summer camps, and served as a referee in both minor and adult games in the US and Canada.

Leigh Singh
"Pop Pop’s Promise" (Inspirational true story--in Chicken Soup to Inspire the Body and Soul, ed. Jack Canfield et al)
In a Chicken Soup anthology celebrating body and soul--physical renewals and spiritual revelations--Leigh Singh writes of longtime struggle and ultimate gratitude. In her younger years, she was discouraged by her experience with cerebral palsy and had trouble accepting the wisdom of her grandfather, Pop Pop. Every part of life, he believed, "holds the promise of something good." Later, through the steadfast assistance and love of her service dog, a golden Labrador named Slugger, Leigh grew to understand what her grandfather had meant. "I learned to define myself not by what I had to overcome, but by what I had the courage to become."
Leigh Singh is a writer, model, motivational speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities. Her work has appeared in magazines, newsletters, and books, including the magazine Pets: Part of the Family; Just Labs: A Celebration of the Labrador Retriever; the Pet Gazette; and the Guideposts’ book, Soul Menders. Something Good: The Story of a Dog's Love and Service (book-length nonfiction) was one of only twelve narrative nonfiction projects selected out of hundreds of submissions to the prestigious Squaw Valley Writers Workshops, August 2004.
